Bryan Foerst and his 47 3/4" muskie caught Nov. 14, Lake Monona, Madison
The Madison Region is rich with outdoor resources. State parks, county parks, lakes, rivers, and trails provide visitors and residents with an abundance of opportunities for relaxation, exploration, and play. They also foster an environment of stewardship and provide a beautiful backdrop to everyday life.
The Madison Region is an intersection of four different ecological landscapes as defined by the Department of Natural Resources. Rock, Dane, Jefferson, and Dodge counties, along with parts of Green and Columbia counties, are part of the Southwest Glacial Plains. The Southwest Savannah includes parts of both Iowa and Green counties, and the Central Sand Hills include a significant portion of Columbia County. Sauk County and parts of Iowa County are included in the Western Coulee and Ridges landscape.
These landscapes translate into beautiful state parks, offering natural beauty and recreation opportunities for everyone. Of Wisconsin's 98 state parks, 12 are located in the Madison Region: Aztalan, Blue Mound, Browntown-Cadiz Springs Recreation Area, Devil's Lake, Governor Dodge, Governor Nelson, Lake Kegonsa, Mirror Lake, Natural Bridge, New Glarus Woods, Rocky Arbor, and Tower Hill. These parks are distributed throughout Dane, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, and Sauk Counties.
