When the original MGE Innovation Center opened at University Research Park in 1989, Novagen was one of its first tenants.
The local startup had three employees, including co-founder Robert Mierendorf, and was a subsidiary of Pel-Freez, a Rogers, Ark., company that processes rabbit meat and manufactures biological products for scientific research.
Novagen's mission then was to create gene libraries — or collections of genetic material used for research — and to make test kits of reagents, or chemicals, used in research.
Today, almost 20 years later, Mierendorf heads another local startup, Semba Biosciences, and Novagen is still going strong, with an expanded portfolio, bigger staff and sleek quarters.
