In December of 2009, total employment in the Madison Region was 557,735, an increase of over 34,000 from the previous month and nearly 19% of Wisconsin's total employment. This is up from 522,000 in 2008 and almost to the employment level of 524,000 in 2007.

In 2007, the per capita income for the Madison Region was $38,067, an increase of 4.5% from 2006. The region continues to exceed the per capita income of the state of Wisconsin ($36,272) and is almost equal to that of the United States ($38,615).

Large employers in the region include American Family Insurance, Epic Systems Corporation, Lands' End, SSM Health Care, the Monroe Clinic, and Quad/Graphics Inc. Employment opportunities extend throughout all sectors.
