Healthcare in the Madison Region shines forth as both a foundation of many communities and a potentially unbeatable competitive advantage for all businesses in the region.
Direct providers of healthcare services in the region account for
over 1000 companies and organizations. Add in the businesses which supply and serve the healthcare delivery system and the number increases substantially. Matthew Kures of the UW-Extension states "we can't overlook the fact that rural hospitals provide an anchor for other health care jobs, such as physicians and pharmacists that, in the absence of the hospital, may not be available. Many of the communities that UW-Extension works with cite their inability to attract and retain college graduates. Hospitals provide employment for these individuals and help stem the so-called brain drain."
In addition, tremendous opportunities exist in the overlap between healthcare and biotechnology, especially biomedical advances.
