Columbia County will grow in the next quarter-century, both in jobs and population, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor told representatives of several south-central Wisconsin counties Monday morning in Portage.
Most of the population growth will be among older people and immigrants, Steve Deller said, and much of the job growth will be in the relatively low-paying service sector.
Deller, a professor of agricultural and applied economics, can create detailed economic and demographic forecasts for any of Wisconsin's 72 counties, but chose Columbia County as the subject of his presentation on "economic mega-trends" largely because Columbia County was the host for the monthly meeting of the Intercounty Coordinating Committee. The organization also includes the counties of Sauk, Dodge, Green Lake and Jefferson.
