Mid-Continent RR Museum considers satellite facility

Railroad history buffs may soon have a new entry on their list of places to see.
Representatives from the Mid-Continent Railway Museum hope to establish a satellite location in Mazomanie, about 20 miles south of the museum's current home in North Freedom.
But part of the proposal could spark controversy, because it may include running train tours on a section of unused track between Mazomanie and Sauk City. That's a section that the Sauk Prairie community wants to convert to a bike trail as a way to draw tourism.
Don Meyer, manager of the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, said the proposal came about as the result of a relationship that recently blossomed between the museum and the village of Mazomanie.
For the last two years, Mazomanie has hosted the museum's annual Gandy Dancer Festival, which features bluegrass music and train rides. And Mid-Continent has since established a temporary historical display in an old blacksmith building there.
