Amish farmers in remote Grant County might bring their products to the Fennimore Produce Auction by horse and buggy, but they're also using an innovative online system developed by a Madison entrepreneur to get their squash, pumpkins and potatoes into a number of city grocery stores.
Greenleafmarket.com launched this week to bring farmers together with grocers, restaurants, schools and other institutions. The goal of the site, developed by local entrepreneur Heather Hilleren, is to increase local consumption of locally produced products by matching buyers and sellers.
Hilleren said in an interview Tuesday that there are approximately 100 businesses currently on the Web site, with the ratio of sellers to buyers at about 2:1.
